REMONDIS Australia has entered into a new business-to-government (B2G) contract with the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service to deliver refuse management services on K’gari.
Also known as Fraser Island, it is a World Heritage-listed national treasure off the coast of Queensland. The island’s status as the world’s largest sand island, its remote location and access only by barge make collecting and transporting refuse particularly demanding.
To meet these challenges safely and reliably, REMONDIS worked with its government client to design a highly specialised 8×8 Iveco Astra collection vehicle with a Superior Pak body, ultra-wide off-road tyres, advanced rust protection and Starlink satellite connectivity to maintain communication in an environment with very limited mobile coverage.
The contract also covers services on the mainland in Cooloola National Park, with collection frequencies flexing between off-peak and peak tourist seasons to manage strongly fluctuating refuse volumes.
Vehicles are specially designed to operate in this sensitive environment
This B2G partnership demonstrates how tailored engineering, operational expertise and public-sector cooperation can protect sensitive natural environments while ensuring essential services. By investing in specialised equipment, preventative maintenance and flexible service models, REMONDIS is helping Queensland safeguard K’gari’s unique ecosystems while supporting the region’s tourism economy.
