Last year, it was reported that REMONDIS Aqua would design and build a state-of-the-art zero liquid discharge (ZLD) effluent treatment and water recovery plant for Milky Mist’s facility in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu. Milky Mist is one of India’s leading dairy producers, processing some 20 products, including yoghurt, mozzarella, cheddar and paneer. The new ZLD plant incorporates advanced technologies such as a sludge digester, a membrane bioreactor, multi-stage reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and a multi-effect evaporator. It has a water recovery capacity of 1.3 million litres per day and includes a digester capable of generating 12,500 m3 of biogas from sludge digestion.
Successful commissioning and new contract
Today, this project has reached a significant milestone with the successful commissioning of the ZLD plant. In addition, Milky Mist has awarded REMONDIS Aqua a new contract covering the design, installation and commissioning of an additional 1.3 million litres per day water recovery system.
The new contract focuses on upgrading the existing old effluent treatment plant, which will enable Milky Mist to recover additional water and further reduce its dependency on raw water supplies. This new treatment train processes the effluent using a membrane bioreactor, followed by a multi-stage recycling process with two-stage reverse osmosis and nanofiltration. The reverse osmosis reject is then sent to the evaporators installed by REMONDIS under the earlier project to achieve full zero liquid discharge, so that virtually no water leaves the site and valuable water resources are recovered for use in production.
