Smart waste bins in Mülheim

How Mülheim an der Ruhr is improving city cleanliness with BINITY

Complex route planning, paperwork, lack of transparency regarding fill levels and inefficient emptying. Most companies in the circular economy are familiar with these challenges. Mülheimer Entsorgungsgesellschaft mbH wanted to tackle these issues head-on and introduced BINITY: the software solution developed by REMONDIS Digital creates a digital overview of all containers, vehicles and routes. This enables flexible and targeted control of container emptying.

Choosing a digital solution

MEG in Mülheim an der Ruhr introduced BINITY for static route planning in November 2022. As part of this process, all container locations were digitally recorded and entered into the BINITY dashboard.

In mid-2023, sensors for measuring fill levels were installed in all 369 waste paper containers. The aim was to only empty containers when they were actually full. This avoids inefficient and unnecessary journeys. It also reduces overfilling and contamination at the collection point.

With BINITY, containers are now automatically scheduled into a dynamic route at an individually defined fill level and picked up by drivers. The planning module creates the most efficient route between locations. With an app, the drivers in the truck have access to the route via their smartphone and can navigate to the individual locations. The app also facilitates communication between colleagues on the road and dispatch.

MEG has opted for BINITY. This should help to avoid unnecessary journeys and reduce container overfilling and contamination at the collection point.

“We save time and even improve quality in both planning and reporting container emptying. Planning takes just a few clicks and takes into account current fill levels from sensor data. Reporting no longer has to be done manually using Excel lists, but is recorded digitally by the driver directly during emptying.“
