Training as an investment in the future

Almost 600 young people are now starting their careers with the REMONDIS Group

When a new chapter in life begins, it is often accompanied by excitement and uncertainty. If we look at the first day of the apprenticeship, this is reflected in questions such as: What are my colleagues like? Which topics will shape the apprenticeship, and which tasks will I need to master first? And what sort of company have I actually chosen to start my working life with – what industry is it in, and what values does it stand for?

Welcome at the headquarters

Anyone who chooses to do an apprenticeship at REMONDIS will find that everyone here is given a warm welcome. After all, the transition into working life is such a significant step that it’s perfectly fine to pause for a moment and savour the occasion. With the official apprenticeship induction at the beginning of August, REMONDIS provides the annual framework for this. This year, too, this meant that a representative group of new apprentices gathered at the headquarters in Lünen to mark the start of their journey together. Frank Dohmen, managing director and head of HR, welcomed them and provided an insight into the group’s activities. The programme also included an informative tour of the Lippewerk site.

The fact that these young men and women will now be part of a family-run business with values such as stability, security and reliability was already evident from the warm welcome they received and the encouraging words they were given to take with them on their journey.

In a sense, these young professionals are following in the footsteps of Norbert Rethmann, who himself joined his father’s then still relatively small haulage company as an apprentice several decades ago. Today we know that, through his dedication and entrepreneurial skill, this former apprentice transformed his father’s company into one of the leading providers of recycling, municipal and industrial services, and water management. A company that has long since expanded its operations internationally, from Europe to Australia.

The company therefore continuously invests in its business and the next generation, enabling steady growth and further development across generations. “We are delighted that you have chosen the family-run company REMONDIS as your employer. The current figures alone show that you are in good company,” said Frank Dohmen, referring to the facts.

The new training year in figures

A total of 584 young people have chosen REMONDIS and its numerous public-private partnerships as their training company this year. This means that 1,820 young people across all year groups are currently undergoing training at REMONDIS. Within the RETHMANN Group – which, in addition to REMONDIS, also comprises the sister companies SARIA, Rhenus and Transdev – there are currently 2,521 apprentices, with 780 new recruits having joined the company this year.

The tasks undertaken by these young people are as varied as the professions themselves. At REMONDIS, the professional driver training programme remains in high demand, as drivers form the backbone of a wide range of logistics services. There are 477 new trainees on the professional driver training programme, 163 of whom are new recruits. In second place are industrial management assistants, with a total of 231, followed by office management assistants, with 162.

An apprenticeship with a purpose

One of the reasons why so many young people choose REMONDIS may well lie in the nature of the company’s day-to-day work. From recovering valuable raw materials from waste, through municipal services that keep the city clean, to the technically sophisticated treatment and recovery of commercial and industrial waste, young professionals can always be confident that their work makes a valuable contribution. And this is true regardless of whether they are driving a lorry, coordinating operations in administration or working in recycling and plant engineering.

“If it were up to us, all products and packaging would be 100 per cent recyclable, and every drop of water would be treated and returned to the cycle in a clean state. We are all working here every day to ensure that this vision becomes a reality one day.”
